Hi:
My name is Francis Moss. I've been an eBay bookseller since 1999. When I began selling books, CDs, and entertainment memorabilia, I was faced with the same problems you have today... although 9 years ago there were two million eBay users.
Today, there are 200 million! Believe me, I struggled for years to make a profit!
You've got 30 books you want to sell. eBay charges $.25 to list each of 30 books, for a total of $7.50. You sell five books at $5.00 each (higher than average, by the way), for a gross total of $25.00.
eBay collects 8.75% of the $25.00, or $2.19. Your winning bidders pay you through PayPal, which deducts $.45 per book for their fees.
Sure, you could relist your unsold items. EBay will refund your relisting fee IF the book sells the second time.
Here is your profit: = $25 - $7.50 - $2.19 - $2.25 = $13.06! And we haven’t even deducted the cost of your time, or the cost of the books!
I've always been an avid reader and book collector, but could never manage to part with the books once I'd read them. I might want to read this one again, I'd tell myself.
Well, time went on, I bought more books. Books were taking up every shelf and sat in piles on the floor. my wife laid down an ultimatum: either the books went or she would.
Around this time (we're talking 1999), a friend told me he'd been selling his old laser disks at this online auction site called eBay. I saw that this brand new technology called DVDs was going to make my large collection of laser disks obsolete.
Now I had a double motivation: I wanted to save my marriage and avoid having a stack of shiny Frisbees. So I opened up an eBay and a PayPal account, and put up my first ads.
Those ads were awful! No pictures, no formatting, vague descriptions… I had no clue. I broke every salesmanship rule in the book.
In spite of my ineptitude, I eventually managed to sell every single one of my laser disks! And I sold enough books to keep my wife from moving out.
But it was hard work. And the books I sold were NOT hot items. The only thing that kept me going was the fear of that empty spot in the bed next to me (Just kidding, but my wife was getting really fed up!)
Then I managed to get my hands on several hundred books. I was determined not to let them take over my house. But I knew I'd better figure out how to do better at selling books.
The vast majority of booksellers on eBay start out just like me. They slap up a few auctions and wait for the bidding action to begin.
And wait...
And wait...
And wait!
A few sell... most don't. And then what? Rinse and repeat. Rinse and repeat.
...until you give up and donate your books to Goodwill.
I was determined not to make eBay rich at my expense. So I did some research.
I started by reading books on salesmanship.
I ordered hundreds of dollars of online courses that promised to turn me into a master salesman.
I visited the sales pages of successful and not-so-successful eBay book sellers (trust me... there are a lot of unsuccessful sellers!).
I experimented with different item titles, different descriptions, different photographs.
Oh, yeah. I'm still married. To the same wife. What a saint!
I've learned three true things about books:
Over the last nine years, I’ve learned, by painful trial and error, how to take a commodity—books—and turn them into a powerful eBay market.
Here’s the bottom line:
I know what some of you are thinking: There are used bookstores in every town, other online auction sites are springing up, you can always have a yard sale. Why eBay?
The most sales of single items are in books!
Still not convinced? Then let's take a look at a typical eBay day.
Here's an eBay snapshot (taken April 10, 2008). From eBay's categories, I selected the most popular items at auction or for sale:
and (GET THIS!)…
559,607 listings for books!
Now some of those listings are not for books, but book accessories: covers, reading lights, stands and other items. Let's say three-quarters of those listings are actual books for sale.
Even so, you're thinking, "That's a lot of competition! I can't get anywhere going up against over four hundred thousand eBay booksellers!"
Yes you can. And here's all the help you'll ever need:

Using the proven methods in this fact-filled eBook, you can not only compete against all those sellers – you can WIN!
The fact of the matter is, every single day, eBay's tens of thousands of hungry buyers cough up $831,0O0 – EIGHT HUNDRED AND THIRTY ONE THOUSAND DOLLARS – for books! If you're not getting a piece of that action… what are you waiting for?
Every minute of every day 20 books are auctioned off.
If you've been selling on eBay for a while, you know it can be hard to even get visitors – much less bidders – to your auctions. And if you're new to eBay, it seems like a daunting task.
Here are some equally daunting facts…
How can you overcome these odds?

It doesn’t matter whether you're a newbie to eBay or a PowerSeller…

If you're already selling books on eBay, you know how frustrating it can be. You gather your inventory, put up dozens or hundreds of ads… then wait for bids that often never come! You get frustrated at trying to do too much… and you wind up not doing anything.
